During our Finnish farm tour, we had the absolute pleasure of visiting Koivikon Kartano in the beautiful Kiteen Puhos region—and it was an experience we will not soon forget. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and embraced by the peaceful Finnish countryside. A very special thank you also goes to Mr. Pekka, the owner of this impressive organic dairy farm. A Model of Modern Organic Farming Koivikon Kartano is a shining example of what modern organic dairy farming can look like when done with care and excellence. Home to approximately 160 cows, the farm operates with a philosophy that puts animal wellbeing at the very center. The cows are housed in a comfortable free-stall barn equipped with state-of-the-art robotic milking systems. This technology allows the cows to be milked on their own schedule, reducing stress and promoting natural behavior. But perhaps the most beautiful detail of all? During the grazing season, the cows are free to choose whether they spend their time indoors or out on the pasture. This freedom is a wonderful expression of animal welfare and respect for the creatures we steward. From Farm to Table and Beyond What makes Koivikon Kartano truly special is its diversification. This is not just a farm—it's a community hub. The high-quality organic milk produced here is supplied to Valio's Joensuu dairy, where it is transformed into delicious organic cheese. Knowing the journey from cow to cheese added a layer of appreciation for the food on our tables. But the farm's offerings don't stop there. Visitors can explore the on-farm shop, stay in cozy accommodations, enjoy delicious meals at the restaurant, and even participate in community events. It is a beautiful model of how a farm can sustain not just a family, but an entire community.
